MAKE ALLOWANCES (FOR RACHEL) (2022)
(Digital/3min/Colour/UK)
SPOILER ALERT: The visual material in this video is taken from near the end of The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999) and depicts the (spectacular) murder of MANY of the most important characters.
If you don't want to know who dies, watch the film first!
Make Allowances (for Rachel)' is based upon the second video essay exercise from The Videographic Essay: Practice and Pedagogy book.
The creative parameters for this exercise are as follows:
1. select a continuous visual sequence from your chosen film, of up to three minutes.
2. record and add a voiceover to accompany it.
3. the voiceover should be 'an independent verbal channel of material NOT overtly related to the chosen media object. The content could be the participant’s own original material or something that others had written/spoken'.
For this exercise, I combined a reading of Richard Price's poem, 'in your generous hours', with a three–minute sequence from The Rage: Carrie 2 (1999, directed by Katt Shea). You are allowed to 'manipulate the clip's duration', which I did, editing it down from around 4mins 30 , to 3 minutes in total.
