ALIEN NATION (2011)

In 2011, I co-organised the ALIEN NATION: BRITISH SCIENCE FICTION, HORROR AND FANTASY TELEVISION conference at the University of Northumbria with James Leggott.
Our keynote speakers:
Stacey Abbott (Roehampton) ‘“Not Suitable for Children or For Those of You Who May Have a Nervous Disposition”: The Horror Legacy of Nigel Kneale’
Peter Wright (Edge Hill) ‘Ringing the Changes: The Condition of England and the BBC's Adaptation of Peter Dickinson's Changes Trilogy'
Helen Wheatley (Warwick) ‘Uncanny children, haunted houses, hidden rooms: Children’s Gothic television in the 1970s and 80s’
We ran multiple parallel panels over the two-day event, and had over 50 presenters from Europe, North America and East Asia. We also ran a special roundtable debate, asking what is British about British Telefantasy? This was chaired by Peter Hutchings (Northumbria), and featured Cathy Johnson (Nottingham), Jonathan Bignell (Reading), James Chapman (Leicester) and Dave Rolinson (Stirling).
Finally, there was also an accompanying season of Cult British Television at the Star and Shadow CInema in Newcastle, including screenings of Ghostwatch, Penda's Fen, The Stone Tape, Schalcken the Painter and The Exorcism.
The event was live blogged by Frank Collins of Cathode Ray Tube, then reviewed by writer Una McCormack. The event received multiple write ups in scholarly publications, including Visual Culture in Britain and Journal of British Cinema and Television.
